Sikhism commences with the life, teachings,and times of Guru Nanak. He was a man of non-conformist and had a different vision towards religion. He was not opposed the Hindu religion but discarded some of practices like untouchability, caste system etc. He not only critiqued the existing life of people of Punjab but also gave an alternative way of socio-religious organization to his followers.
Nanak's teachings are very practical one. He asked his followers to live an Ideal man who runs his household on the basis of his own labour, attends the sangat ( community gatherings) and kirtan ( community singing of songs for praising God) at the Gurudwara or Dharamsala. He developed a new technique of community dinning ( langar) to abolished the existing caste system to brought unity among his followers.
Let's discuss some of the remarkable words of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.....
1. The true Guru has given me the treasure of the name and my mind is filled with gladness.
2. God is one,but He has innumerable forms. He is the creator of all and He Himself takes human form.
3. Everyone utters the name of the Lord but only by mere utterance alone one doesn't realize Him.
4. When through the Guru's gray the Lord is enshrined in the mind one gathers the fruits of that grace.
5. To meet the saints and to have their company is the greatest pilgrimage. To see a saint gives one the merit of all the sixty eight places of pilgrimage.
6. Remember the true Master within yourself and with the tongue repeat the word given by the Master.
7. The absolute is wordless,imageless and nameless . When it came into being,it was called Word, which is the cause of all creation.
8. As fragrance abides in the flower,as the reflection is within the mirror, so does the Lord abide within you, why search for Him without?
9. The supreme purpose of human existence is salvation which can be attained by getting relieved from the endless cycles of birth and rebirth. This salvation is a prerogative of all humankind irrespective of birth,creed, caste and sex.
10. The supreme purpose i.e, Salvation can be achieved by right belief , right worship ,and right conduct which are all taught by the Guru.
From the life of Nanak we can learn many and the teachings of Nanak is now very vital for the world in general and India in particular to develop the unity , integrity among the masses.
