The word Bhakti means devotion, while Yoga in this case signifies union of the individual soul with God. Hence Bhakti yoga is the method of devotion by which the communion of the soul with the supreme Deity is accomplished. It shows what kind of devotion and love for God will bring the soul into the most intimate relation with the divine being and how a ordinary heart feels when it directs toward God ward .
Bhakti yoga teaches that the final end of all religions can be reached through love and worship of the personal God, who is the creator and Governor of the phenomenal universe. It is especially suited for such as are emotional in their nature and have the feeling of love and devotion highly developed. It is for those devotees who, conscious of their own weekness arising from lack of self control and of knowledge, seek help from outside.
A follower of Bhakti yoga ( like Mira Bai ,poet Rash Khan, Dasia Bauri etc ) should feel God as closely related to his soul as he possibly can . He must see his lord in every beings as he knows the fact that everything of this universe is governed by the one ultimate reality. When the whole heart and soul of a Bhakta or lover of God flow like the unbroken current of a mighty river , when it goes towards the ocean like that he finds no attraction in the world ,holds him back . He dedicated his entire life to his lord , which is form of complete surrender i.e the pure bhakti .... Every action of his body and mind is performed simply to please his Beloved One. His ( true bhakt ) nature of I,Me, Mine will turn into Thou,Thee,Thine.
He discards his all illusion and sensual pleasures and lives on the spiritual plane of God consciousness. When he casts his eyes , he sees the presence of his lord and enjoys unbounded peace and happiness. It is for this reason that Bhakti Yoga is considered to be the easiest of all methods.
Q.How to be a Bhakta Yogi ?
Bhakti yoga has two grades -------
1.. Gauni 2. Para
Gauni is the preparatory stage and includes all the preliminary practices like free from the sense , free from the earthly attachment etc and the final stage i.e the God realisation is the stage of Para.
Swami Abhedananda wrote ," if by good fortune, he meets such a real bhakta , he should receive from him the seed of BHAKTI, plant it in the ground of his heart ,and by faithfully following the instructions of the master , take special care to keep it alive and make it grow, until it becomes a large tree bearing the fruit of divine love."
again he wrote ," during this period he should avoid such company, such places ,and such amusements as make him forget his chosen Ideal. He should live a chaste and pure life always discriminating right from wrong and struggling to control his passions and desires by directing them God ward."
One must be angry with himself for not realising his ideal and should hate his sinful nature because it keeps him away from the path of Bhakti. He must maintain cleanliness of his body and mind , and should be truthful. Gradually a Bhakta approaches God , he will rise above the all dualistic concepts . Then he will reach that state called qualified non dualism. He sees that from a tiny creature to the man all are related to ISWARA ( the most appropriate sanskrit word for God who is the all pervading , omnipresent, internal Ruler of the universe) . Then he is able to say from the bottom of his heart ," Let Thy will be done" , and he never forgets his soul is the part of ISWARA. Gradually he finds all his works becomes acts of devotion and then the heart is purified and selfishness is dead. Finally he becomes a true Bhakta .
So to be a Bhakta Yogi what is required basically is complete surrender , whole heartedness, deep interest with proper intention . The only difference between a ordinary being and being a Bhakta Yogi is the deepest believe and faith from the core of the heart ....
