Shiva , the supreme consciousness, is the source of all energy and omnipresent. Shiva is the principle from where everything has come and sustained and finally everything dissolved into it.
It is the consciousness which is bliss and innocence, the consciousness which is the bestower of dispassion. The whole world is moving in an auspicious rhythm of innocence and intelligence and that is the Shiva. The permanent and eternal source of energy, the eternal state of being, the one and the only one is Shiva. The soul and the Shiva has no difference. The mahavakya of Adiguru Shankaracharya is clearly states that "Ahm Bramhasmi" and "Ayam Atmam Bramho" i.e I'm that.
According to Sri Sri ,"Shiva doesn't have a body,he was never a person at all. To symbolise the unfathomable infinite divinity, and to make it comprehensible for people, they made a form". Infact the British scholars who made immense studies on the Indian scriptures pointed out that all the Purans are the Symbolic representation of Vedic knowledge and these are not myth . And if you take a deep analysis of it you also find it true. Thats why after vedic period in the Puranic phase for the understanding of common man the scholars made some symbolic representation like Tri Murti. In Veda there is no name mentioned of Shankar but it is Rudra and Shankar is a Puranic name . Thats why Shankar is depicted with his sex , gender, family and all other attributes.
Shankar has a family which includes his consort Parvati, two son Ganesha and Kartikeya , and all of them have their vehicles and also Shankar is regarded as the first of all like first Yogi, Guru , Dancer , vocalist, Warrior etc.
So it is clear that the word Shiva ,Rudra , Shankar are synonymous but has different meaning .
Shiva is the source of Bliss where Shankar is the symbol of happiness.
Thats why it is written in the Puran as Shiva Paramatmane namah .
There is a controversy among the followers of Shiva and Vishnu about the superiority but in Shivpuran a meaningful story is written like all the followers of Vishnu say that baby form of Vishnu floats in a leaf of pupil tree on water when destruction of the world starts but who creates the water . And the answer is Shiva.
But we are not comparing between them as they are all in equal and have the same source with different duties. Even Rama is a incarnation of Vishnu says while in the construction of Rameswaram that Ramasya Ishwar cho Rameswar and Shankar also says Rama jasya Ishwar cho Rameswar.
So it is again clear that all of them are different incarnation of the same source in different time ...
Like that the soul which resides in us is also the form of that formless Shiva and that is the reason of the name Pasupati.
So there are countless names given by devotee for the purpose of worshipping.
At last the main theme is that we all have a soul which derives it's power from the one source .. the consciousness in us has the source in that supreme consciousness and the moment when the Shiv is out of our body we become Shav.
