Nataraja: dancing shiva ,symbolises the cosmic dances of atoms.

Nataraja often regarded as the king of dance is also one of a potrait of lord shiva . Have you heard about the fact that a dancing Shiva (Nataraja) statue is there at CERN, particle physics lab, Switzerland?

Albeit the fact ,that a 2 metre statue was a gift from the Government of India to CERN as a celebration of their partnership but to understand the logical reason, the concept of Shiva's cosmic dance which often symbolises the cycle of destruction and creation is important.

Shiva is one of the most revered deities in Hinduism and is considered as the supreme god in Shaivism, one of the major branches of Hinduism. He is also referred to as "Mahadeva" which means "Great God" or "Great Deity".

Shiva is depicted in Hindu scriptures as the god of destruction and regeneration, signifying the cycle of creation and destruction in the universe. He is responsible for destroying the old and making way for the new, symbolizing the constant change and evolution in the universe. He is often depicted with a third eye on his forehead, which is said to represent his omniscience and ability to see the past, present, and future.

According to Hindu shastras, Shiva is married to the goddess Parvati and is the father of the god Ganesha and the god Kartikeya. He is often portrayed as an ascetic, who lives a life of solitude and meditation in the Himalayas. He is also depicted as a destroyer of evil, who battles demons and evil spirits to protect his devotees.

Shiva is worshipped in various forms and has many different representations, including the "Lingam", which is a symbol of his phallic power and represents his ability to create and regenerate life. He is also worshipped in the form of the "Shivlinga", which is a rounded, cylindrical stone that is considered as his sacred representation.

In Hinduism, Shiva is considered as a symbol of purity, as he is said to live a simple and ascetic life, devoid of material possessions and attachments. He is also considered as a symbol of compassion, as he is said to forgive his devotees and grant them moksha, or liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

So from all those aforesaid explanation it is clear that the cosmic dance of shiva is not only a dance but it actually acts as a symbol. The symbolic representation of the cycle of destruction and creation.

Now read the below paragraphs which are extracted from the lines of Fritjof Copra which reads like,

Regarding the thinking and symbolism behind the donation of that statue of Shiva as Nataraj - Lord of the Cosmic Dance:

(“Unveiled on June 18, 2004, the two-metre-tall statue was a gift from the Government of India.) A plaque next to the statue, with a quote by Fritjof Capra, explains its significance:

“Hundreds of years ago, Indian artists created visual images of dancing Shivas in a beautiful series of bronzes. In our time, physicists have used the most advanced technology to portray the patterns of the cosmic dance. The metaphor of the cosmic dance thus unifies ancient mythology, religious art and modern physics.”

Physicist Fritjof Capra further explained in The Tao of Physics:

“The Dance of Shiva symbolises the basis of all existence. At the same time, Shiva reminds us that the manifold forms in the world are not fundamental, but illusory and ever-changing. Modern physics has shown that the rhythm of creation and destruction is not only manifest in the turn of the seasons and in the birth and death of all living creatures, but is also the very essence of inorganic matter."

"According to quantum field theory, the dance of creation and destruction is the basis of the very existence of matter. Modern physics has thus revealed that every subatomic particle not only performs an energy dance, but also is an energy dance; a pulsating process of creation and destruction. For the modern physicists then, Shiva’s dance is the dance of subatomic matter, the basis of all existence and of all natural phenomena.”

In conclusion, Shiva is a complex and multifaceted deity in Hinduism, who embodies the cyclical nature of creation and destruction, and represents the balance between opposites in the universe. He is worshipped and revered by millions of Hindus all over the world, who seek his blessings for peace, prosperity, and spiritual growth.
