Maa Chandraghanta: Symbol of Courage, Justice, and Grace

Discrimination is often a byproduct of societal development. Every society, throughout its development, has been affected by some form of discrimination. However, everything has an end. In the nineteenth century, racial discrimination in the USA was at its peak. This inhuman practice persisted for years. In 1955, the massive Montgomery Bus Boycott took place as a protest against racial discrimination. A Black African American woman named Rosa Parks was humiliated when she was asked to give up her seat for a white passenger, sparking a protest. Many others from the Black community joined her in a peaceful movement. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. emerged as a leader during this time. After 381 days of protest, which became a key moment in the American Civil Rights Movement, justice was achieved. The U.S. Supreme Court declared segregation on public buses unconstitutional.

This is a powerful story of courage and justice. Their collective strength of courage against oppression led to a significant victory  of justice.

In the India folklore, we also find the same qualities of courage and justice from the life of MAA Chandraghanta. Let's take a deep dive into her life.

In Hinduism, each form of the Mother Goddess, Maa Durga, represents a specific aspect of female power (Shakti). On the third day of Navaratri, devotees worship Maa Chandraghanta, the personification of courage, justice and peace. Her name comes from the crescent moon (Chandra) worn on her forehead, which resembles as a bell (Ghanta). The meaning of this adornment is balance, harmony and peace. But underneath her calm exterior is a great force and a defender of justice.

The Saga of Maa Chandraghanta

According to Indian scriptures, Maa Chandraghanta is one other form of Parvati. After marrying to  Lord Shiva, she adorned herself in different complextions and gave  peace and happiness to her devotees. She rides a lion, representing courage and readiness for battle if necessary to deliver justice. Armed with many weapons in her ten hands, she remains vigilant and determined to protect her devotees and defeat evil.

It is believed that  sound comes from her bell sends shivers into the hearts of demons and drives them away, but is also a source of comfort for his devotees. The duality of his nature teaches us that although life requires love and balance, there are times when we must rise with strength and courage to face challenges.

So the first two important qualities should be learnt from MAA Chandraghanta are justice and courage.

Courage and justice are deeply associated qualities that uphold  moral of a society. Courage is the strength to act in the face of fear, uncertainty, or adversity, often requiring one to stand against wrongs, despite personal risk.

Justice  narrow channel between the oppressor and the oppressed. It is the pursuit of fairness and equality, ensuring that every individual receives what is rightfully theirs.

Without courage, justice remains a mirage which is unfulfilled  and empty in the real world. True justice  questions prevailing norms, and defends the rights of the vulnerable. In essence, courage fuels the drive to make justice an abstract reality.
