Yoga means assimilation. Yoga is not merely Pranayama; Pranayama is a branch of Yoga. Yoga essentially describes the assimilation of human consciousness with the supreme consciousness. When the inner consciousness of the Jivatma connects with the supreme consciousness of the universe, it leads to the state of Samadhi, the state of pure nothingness, yet absolute completeness. That is the state of equality, which is what we truly need as humans. This is what Lord Shiva teaches us. For this reason, Shiva is referred to as Adi Yogi.Lord Shiva, as Adi Yogi, embodies this supreme state of union and transcendence. Not only Yoga, but Lord Shiva is also the propounder of sound(nada), dance(tandav), music, tantra, and many more aspects of cosmic existence.
Adiyogi, the First Yogi is considered the originator of yoga, meditation, and spiritual wisdom, bringing the ancient knowledge of self-realization to humanity. His experiments exposed this inner science for the common masses.
The word "Adiyogi"means "the first yogi."In Hindu tradition, Shiva is not just a god but the ultimate source of knowledge, consciousness, and transformation. He is beyond birth and death, beyond time and space. He embodies the highest form of self-realization.He is often depicted in deep meditation on Mount Kailash, absorbed in complete stillness and bliss.
Adiyogi represents the limitless potential of human consciousness. He is the first to achieve complete mastery over the mind, body, and soul, making him the originator of yoga. As Adiyogi, Shiva teaches that yoga is not just physical exercise but a journey to spiritual awakening.
According to legend, Shiva appeared in the Himalayas thousands of years ago as a mystical, powerful being in a deep state of meditation. Many people saw him but could not understand his presence. His energy was so intense that only a few were drawn toward him with curiosity.
Among them were seven seekers, who later became the Saptarishis (Seven Great Sages). These seven seekers observed Shiva in meditation and asked him to teach them the path to enlightenment. After their deep meditation(purification )practices,Shiva finally accepted them as his disciples and started preaching them the science of yoga. This event is considered the birth of yoga, making Adiyogi the first guru (Adi Guru). Some spiritual philosophers interpreted this event as Shiva has complete mastery over the seven vital chakras of the body .Shiva taught yoga to the seven rishis, who later spread his wisdom across the world.
