Hindu scriptures are full of fascinating life stories that teach us deep spiritual and moral lessons. One such powerful event is that of Neelkanth, the blue-throated form of Lord Shiva. It revolves around the great event known as Samudra Manthan (the Churning of the Ocean), during which a deadly poison, Halahala, emerged.Lord Shiva drank this poison for the sake of humanity and became Neelkanth, meaning the one with a blue throat.
This is a great example of sacrifice, responsibility, and selflessness. With your additional reading, you will explore some moral principles which teaches us the importance of morals and values in our life.
All these things started from the anger of maharshi Durvasha as he cursed the Devas due to their increasing arrogance. As a result the Devas became weak and unable to won over the Asuras. The Devas sought help from Lord Vishnu, the Preserver of the Universe. Vishnu suggested a great plan as both the Devas and the Asuras should churn the ocean (Kshirsagar) together to obtain Amrita (the nectar of immortality). This divine nectar would make the Devas immortal and powerful again and the Asuras agreed because they too wanted immortality.
The Mandara Mountain was chosen as the churning rod, and Vasuki, the serpent king, was used as the churning rope. The Devas held one side of Vasuki, and the Asuras held the other.Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma (a giant tortoise) and supported the mountain on his back to prevent it from sinking. As the ocean was churned, several divine and valuable treasures emerged as ,Kamadhenu,Airavata,KaustubhaMani,Parijata,Apsaras,Varuni,Lakshmi,Halahalbisa, amrita .During the climax of churning suddenly, a dark, terrifying poison called Halahala emerged from the depths of the ocean. This toxic poison had the tendency to spread darkness in all directions.Even the Devas and the Asuras were helpless before its power. The gods and demons realized that if the poison was not stopped, it would destroy all of creation. As per the advice received from lord Bramha and Lord Vishnu, both the Devas and the Asuras rushed towards mount Kailash and seeked help from Lord Shiva to protect the creation. Without hesitation, lord Shiva took the entire poison in his hands and drank it.As soon as Shiva swallowed the poison, his throat started burning with unbearable pain.Suddenly Goddess Parvati, held his throat to prevent the poison from spreading to the rest of his body.Because of this, the poison remained in his throat and turning it a deep blue color which is the saga behind the name Neelkanth.
Symbolic Meaning of Neelkanth-
🛑The Halahala poison represents the negative forces in the world like hatred, jealousy, greed, and ignorance. By consuming it,Shiva teaches us to absorb negativity without letting it affect us.
